How to prepare for business headshots

Choosing a professional photographer for your headshot session can be challenging.  What are the right colors?  What style of backdrop will be used?  Will you need black and white portraits or color?  What is your budget?

All of these questions should be addressed before choosing your portrait photographer.  Keep in mind that every photographer has their own unique style and artistic vision.   Your business and professional headshots should be a true reflection of your personality or the personality you want to project.

Should I smile or be serious?

Well, it is your choice.  However, I will say nothing is more inviting and calming than a greeting with a smile.  First impressions...we've all heard the saying but happens to be true.  When you see someone smile in a portrait, it gives a warm and friendly feeling from the subject.  If you want your portrait to portray you in that light, then Yes, Smile!

Does your photographer offer touch ups?

Trust me, out of hundreds of faces that have been in front of my camera over the years,  I have yet to see a flawless face.  From the smallest of blemishes to the extreme of whitening of the teeth, you have to have that option if needed.  Most credible photographers are experience in minor to major touch ups.  I've even gone as far as taken a few pounds off a client.  Whatever the client wants in order to feel comfortable and confident about their look, we will make sure they are happy with their final portraits.

What are the right colors for business & Professional portraits?

Save the neon, floral and distracting patterns for another session.  Stick with neutrals, browns, navy and blacks. Unfortunately, no one seems to take a criminal lawyer seriously when dressed like Dennis Rodman.  You don't want to wear too much of your personality on your sleeve.

What Style of Backdrop Will You Use?

Most often a clients will request either a dark background or white background in the studio.  These requests are easy to accommodate.   If your shoot is on location, for example at your office, then it can get a little challenging.  A seasoned photographer who has a sense of composition will know what area in your office will be best used for your background.  Keep it simple and not too busy.  The subject of your business headshot portrait should be you and not the background.  It's important to have an idea of what room to use before your photographer arrives. This will save you time and money considering your photographer is probably charging by the hour.  Ask your photographer if he or she will be bringing extra lighting for your business headshot session.  Most offices will not have that beautiful natural lighting that a studio can create.  So, having external lighting is ideal.

What Is Your Budget?

Photographers across the country would have my head for this nest statement but here it is.  I don't believe in spending a fortune on business and professional headshot portraits.  Why?  These type of portraits should be updated at least every two to three years. Unless you have the luxury of a bottomless budget, keep it under $500.
